Surprising Choking Hazards

Mandi Franklin, CPNP

  1. Marshmallows- although soft, these tiny white balls of fluff can easily be swallowed whole, causing complete airway obstruction.

  2. Large quantities of peanut butter- This delicious and nutritious snack is terrific. However, ensure it is not in large amounts! I sometimes recommend adding a little bit of water to thin it out.

  3. Dried fruit- These are typically sticky and hard, leading to choking.

  4. String cheese- I never recommend cutting the string cheese; instead, pull it apart or string it to prevent choking.

  5. Raw Vegetables-These hard veggies can get stuck when they break into smaller pieces in the mouth. This can cause a potentially dangerous choking episode.
