Is it Safe for my Child to Lift Weights?

Mandi Franklin, CPNP

I have had many discussions about this topic this summer.

“At what age can my child start lifting weights?”

“ Is it SAFE for my child to lift weights?”

“How can I make him/her a better athlete?”

Let me start by saying that strength training is SO IMPORTANT!! It helps us prevent future injuries while building muscle and increasing our metabolism.

To answer the question: Yes, children can lift weights (while supervised), but I would not recommend starting before 7-8 years. They should NEVER EVER lift heavy weights. Lifting too heavy or unsupervised can lead to injury.

With that said, you can still do strength training WITHOUT weights. (Think: push-ups).

The goal of any exercise program or sport should remain fun for your child.
