Can My Child Have Caffeine?

Mandi Franklin, CPNP

If you're a patient of mine, you know that one of my favorite questions is, "what do you eat in a day?"

I always ask parents and children not only about sugary beverage intake but also about caffeine consumption.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children 12 years old and under should not consume any energy drinks or caffeine. Children ages 12 to 18 should limit their intake to no more than 100mg daily.

Unfortunately, there is no known safe dosage of caffeine for a child.

So, hold off on coffees, teas, and energy drinks, and stick to water.
